Perhaps not as well-known as other survival experts such as Ray Mears, Les Hiddins is a retired Australian Army veteran, who is now known for his great knowledge on the Australian bush and outback.

Born on the 13 August (which happens to be my birthday as well!) 1946, Les Hiddins toured Vietnam twice before recieving a grant to research survival in northern Australia. I guess this was out of fear that Australia might be invaded by foreign forces. In any case, most of Australia is extremely hard to survive in, for all but the native Australians, who have over 40,000 years of knowledge and experience to draw upon. Les based his research on this knowledge, and used it to publish the Australian Army's Survival Manual (1987), and later the television series The Bushtucker Man.

The Bushtucker Man is made up of three seasons, each with seven or eight episodes covering different environments in northern Australia. He also covers eight stories of survival, usually about some of the early european explorers.

I can highly recommend having a look at this series. It is well-produced, enjoyable and has a wealth of information. You can find many of the episodes on youtube, and otherwise the DVDs are also available for purchase.
